Why This Exists

MCS is the entry requirement. It is not a guarantee of excellence.

MCS certification means an installer meets the regulatory baseline for small-scale renewable energy. It covers technical competence. It does not assess customer service infrastructure, ethical sales practices, workforce standards, or verified customer outcomes. Intelligent Buyers fills that gap.

The UK has over 15,000 active MCS installation teams. Some are outstanding. Some are not. A homeowner has no reliable way to tell them apart from a certificate number alone. Our certification gives the outstanding companies a way to prove it — and gives homeowners a way to find them.

The Standard

Seven pillars. All seven must be met.

Every applicant is assessed across seven dimensions of their business. Partial compliance is not sufficient for certification. The specific scoring methodology is proprietary — it cannot be reverse-engineered or gamed.

Technical Accreditation

Current MCS certification and compliance history. Technical audit outcomes. Ongoing training commitment and certification renewal.

Business Stability

Trading history and longevity. Financial health indicators including credit profile and filed accounts. Director history and corporate structure. Insurance coverage.

Customer Service Infrastructure

Documented customer service processes and response commitments. Complaint handling procedures. Post-installation support and aftercare provisions.

Workforce Standards

Living Wage employer commitment. Employee training and development programmes. Health and safety record. Subcontractor management and oversight.

Installation Quality

Quality control processes. Defect and remediation rates. Component and equipment sourcing standards. Compliance with manufacturer specifications.

Ethical Sales Practices

Transparency of quotation and pricing. Absence of high-pressure tactics. Accuracy of performance projections and savings estimates. Cooling-off compliance.

Customer Outcomes

Verified customer satisfaction data. Review profile across independent platforms. Referral and repeat business rates. Resolution of any regulatory complaints.

What Certification Means

The badge cannot be bought. Only earned.

Intelligent Buyers certification is not a paid endorsement, a membership, or a listing. It is an independent, evidence-based assessment. No commercial relationship influences the certification decision.

Independent assessment

Every application is reviewed by the Intelligent Buyers certification team with independent verification of company filings, accreditation status, public reviews, and financial indicators.

Ongoing monitoring

Certification is not a one-time event. Certified installers are subject to continuous monitoring. Changes in accreditation status, customer satisfaction, or business circumstances may trigger review.

Suspension and revocation

The badge can be suspended or revoked for loss of MCS certification, upheld regulatory complaints, deterioration in customer outcomes, misleading sales practices, or failure to cooperate with renewal.

Annual renewal

Certification is valid for twelve months. Renewal requires updated evidence submission and fresh assessment against the current standard. The bar does not lower over time.

If your public profile passes our initial review, we'll arrange a short call to discuss the remaining pillars — insurance, warranties, workforce standards, and customer service processes. No long forms. No evidence packs until we've both decided it's a good fit.

If your public profile looks strong, we arrange a 15-minute call. We walk through the remaining pillars, answer your questions, and decide together if it's a good fit.

Certification decision

Certified, conditional pass with specific actions, or declined with feedback. Transparent either way.

Certified installers receive the Intelligent Buyers badge and join our homeowner recommendation network for their coverage area.
